KALAMAZOO, Mich.— Clark Logic is partnering with Bike Friendly Kalamazoo (BFK) to bring a 3,000-plus square foot mural to downtown Kalamazoo. Local muralist Patrick Hershberger will paint “Riding the KRVT,” featuring neighborhood bicyclists and the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail, on the North Westnedge Avenue wall of the Clark Logic facility at 436 West Willard Street.

Located just one block north of the new Kalamazoo Event Center, 436 West Willard Street is a historic industrial property that dates back more than a century. After acquiring the facility in 2024, Clark Logic began a comprehensive redevelopment focused on restoring and modernizing the aging site. The work has included environmental remediation, infrastructure improvements, and extensive interior and exterior upgrades.

Today, the revitalized property is being positioned to support modern manufacturing, logistics, and other industrial uses in downtown Kalamazoo. Trim-Pac, a manufacturer of standard and custom die cut and paper trimming products, including dividers, slip sheets, paperboards and corrugated sheets, operates out of the facility.

The mural will span the wall along the west side of the building.

“We are looking forward to seeing this mural come to life in such a prominent downtown location and hope it brings joy to everyone who sees it,” said Jamie Clark, owner and president of Clark Logic. “436 West Willard is a property where we have made significant investments and completed extensive renovations. We are excited to provide the space for this mural and to highlight Bike Friendly Kalamazoo and the KRVT."

"The building has a long history in Kalamazoo, and we see the mural as another chapter in its evolution, connecting that history with renewed investment, public art, and continued economic activity in downtown Kalamazoo while creating something the entire community can enjoy,” added Clark.

Bike Friendly Kalamazoo’s public mural program began in 2022 as a means to enrich public spaces while encouraging bicycling and promoting public safety.

This is the second space Clark Logic has contributed to a Bike Friendly Kalamazoo mural. In the inaugural year of the mural program a 17 by 58 foot mural was completed at 7809 Lovers Lane in Portage.

“Greater numbers of bicyclists on the roads is correlated with improvements in public safety,” said Paul Selden, founder of Bike Friendly Kalamazoo. “These joyful images will put a smile in the hearts of those passing by, improving the quality of life, if only for a moment.”

"The Kalamazoo River Valley Trail is such an important development for our city. It connects our local non-motor traffic to all these incredible adjacent trails across the state of Michigan. My new mural, 'Riding the KRVT,’ will be located on a bike lane that joins with the path," said Hershberger, whose public art appears on buildings in Kalamazoo under the moniker Bonus Saves.

"The entire piece focuses on the vital role that this trail plays in our community," Hershberger said. "I really want to highlight how it supports local bicycling, improves pedestrian safety, and gives people a way to get out and enjoy the natural beauty along the trailway."

Selden hopes that seeing joyful images of bicyclists, “who could be family members, friends and neighbors,” will encourage motorists to slow down a bit and drive more carefully.

Work on the mural is scheduled to commence early September. Financial support for the project is being provided by the Jim Gilmore, Jr. Foundation and private funding.
